Simple Syrup with Variations

Makes about 8 oz. (1 cup)

Ingredients

1 cup sugar
1 cup water
- additional ingredients of your choice (see Simple Syrup Variations below), optional

Simple Syrup:
  1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar and water over medium-high heat; bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar.
  2. Remove from heat; cool for 30 min.
  3. Store in the refrigerator, covered, for up to 5 days.
Simple Syrup Variations:
  1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar and water over medium-high heat; bring to a boil, stirring to dissolve sugar.
  2. When sugar is dissolved, add the ingredient of your choice to the saucepan: 4 oz. peeled, thinly sliced ginger (for Ginger Simply Syrup), ½ oz. fresh rosemary (for Rosemary Simple Syrup) or ½ oz. fresh thyme stems (for Thyme Simple Syrup).
  3. Bring to a simmer. Remove from heat; let steep for 30 min. Strain syrup (discard ginger or herbs); store in the refrigerator, covered, until ready to use.

Tasty Tip:

  • Use simple syrup to make cocktails or to sweetened lemonade, iced tea, hot tea, coffee or hot chocolate.
