Spring Grove Soda Pop
Spring Grove Soda Pop
The history of Spring Grove Soda Pop dates back to 1895, when soda jerks were commonly found in small-town drug stores. After customers at pharmacist G.G. Ristey's Spring Grove, Minnesota, drug store asked to buy the soda to take home, he partnered with his brother-in-law, the town's veterinarian, to buy bottling equipment. Sold locally and served at local restaurants, their bottled soda quickly grew in popularity. After almost 20 years, the two founders struggled to balance their soda company with their regular day jobs and sold Spring Grove Soda Pop in 1913.
The company has changed ownership a few times over the years but remains locally owned and operated in Spring Grove, Minnesota. The original flavor recipes – all crafted in small batches with old-fashioned pure cane sugar – and bottling traditions are kept alive by current owners, Dawn and Bob Hansen. Reimagining their labels and packaging, Dawn and Bob contacted a Spring Grove native, Ove Fossum, restorer of the Model-T truck that became the symbolic logo of Spring Grove Soda Pop and honored the company's longevity and quality throughout its 120-year history. The Hansens also expanded Spring Grove Soda Pop with a stand at the Minnesota State Fair, and, to remember their local roots, opened the company’s first retail outlet in Spring Grove, Minnesota, in 2017.
