A celebration of women and women's history never ends at Kowalski's.

This month, we are very excited to announce a new partnership with acclaimed local pastry chef Rachel Anderson and her brand, Vikings & Goddesses.

Rachel began baking professionally in New York City more than 15 years ago. In 2014, she moved to the Twin Cities, where she added to her résumé with work at various well-known restaurants, including Birchwood Cafe, Revival and Bellecour. Today, Rachel operates Vikings & Goddesses with her partner and husband, Yoji Moro, who himself brings almost six years of experience at Spoon and Stable to the team.

For nearly six years, Vikings & Goddesses has operated as a wholesale bakery in St. Paul, where they partner with local purveyors like Baker's Field Flour & Bread and Hope Creamery to craft a wide assortment of classically made pastries, completely from scratch and very much by hand. Their traditional breakfast pastries are on the menu at popular local coffeehouses like Backstory Coffee Roasters, Five Watt Coffee, Nina's Coffee Café and many more. Additionally, they oversee dessert production for Pittsburg Blue in Edina and also provide the desserts for one of the best steakhouses in the country, Manny's in Minneapolis.

Kowalski's is thrilled to bring Vikings & Goddesses to our Bakery Department, starting with their delectable Chocolate Croissants, made in the style of a traditional French pain au chocolat. Unbelievably flaky and deliciously buttery, this beautiful handmade pastry is wrapped around two semisweet chocolate sticks, or batons, for which the classic pastry is named. Find fresh-baked Vikings & Goddesses Chocolate Croissants in the Donut Case every day.

Also, look for unbaked frozen Chocolate Croissants in the Bake at Home Case. Just allow the pastries to proof at room temperature overnight. In the morning, simply brew some espresso and bake the pastries fresh when you're ready for a taste of Paris right at your kitchen table.

Selection and availability of products vary by market.

What's in a Name?

The name "Vikings & Goddesses" was inspired by a 2013 quote in The New York Times from the late, great James Beard Award-winning Pastry Chef Gina DePalma:

"Female pastry chefs have learned the bittersweet truth – the glowing accolades and adoring headlines don't land on us very often. Relying on them for a sense of pride and accomplishment or using their frequency to measure our worth in the industry is nonsense. We don't need to be told we're the gods or goddesses of the kitchen, because we are the Vikings."
