Kowalski's Markets Named Outstanding Independent Retailer for 2022

Progressive Grocer has just named the 15 honorees in their list of Outstanding Independent Retailers for 2022. Among the winners of this prestigious industry honor was one of the Twin Cities' favorite shopping destinations: Kowalski's Markets.

This iteration of Progressive Grocer's Outstanding Independents focused on how each retailer "has differentiated itself from the rest, fellow indies and major grocery players alike. These differences range from creating memorable prepared food menus unlike anything else on the market to completely rethinking the concept of 'local.'"

In an era in which the retail industry continues to grapple with a lingering pandemic and its exacerbation of supply chain and staffing issues, the achievements of these independent grocers take on even more meaning.

Kowalski's, who was also an Outstanding Independent Retailer in 2021, was honored this year in part for new in-store tech, enhanced e-commerce features and for offering a selection of products not commonly found in grocery stores (including upscale women's fashions, accessories, spa products, luxury home goods, color cosmetics, jewelry and more). Kowalski's was the only Minnesota company named on the list.

Rachael Perron, Culinary & Branding Director for Kowalski's, was honored to receive the award on our behalf.

"To be in the company of the other retailers on this list is incredible," says Rachael. "We feel quite proud of what we've created here in the Twin Cities, and to have it recognized on a national level is absolutely amazing."

Progressive Grocer also recognized Kowalski's for our work with Merrick, Inc. (a nonprofit providing enrichment activities and employment support to disabled local adults) as well as our civic training program. As part of Kowalski's business model, we devote significant resources to training stakeholders to organize, educate and set policy while adhering to democratic principles and standards. We do this in partnership with the Midwest Active Citizenship Initiative. This proprietary program teaches employees that they have the capacity and responsibility to work towards the common good, creating sustainable solutions among diverse self-interests.
